Every day, we see plenty of patients who don’t exactly love going to the dentist. In fact, some of them are downright terrified. But, thanks to our friendly atmosphere, we’re often able to calm even the most severe dental nerves. For patients who need a little extra help to stay relaxed, we have sedation dentistry. With it, we can help anxious patients stay calm and cool during their appointments so they never have to dread going to the dentist again.

Oral Conscious Dental Sedation

Patient taking oral sedative pill

If a patient is seriously afraid of an upcoming procedure or going to the dentist in general, Dr. Calderwood can prescribe them a pill to take about an hour before their scheduled appointment. By the time they reach our dental office, they should already be deeply relaxed from head to toe. They will likely remain awake the entire time and be able to respond to simple commands, but the visit will seem to go by very fast. In fact, this form of sedation is so strong that we require a friend or family member to drive a patient to and from our dental office the day of their appointment.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry

Inside of nightrous oxide mask

Many people know nitrous oxide as laughing gas. In our dental office, we administer nitrous oxide to enhance patient comfort and relieve anxiety for patients of all ages. After you're comfortably seated in the dental chair, you'll inhale the gas (nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture) through a face mask. We will control the amount of nitrous you receive to ensure your safety. You will begin to relax and will not recognize pain, so the dentist can perform your dental work while you stay completely comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide subside once we remove your mask, so if nitrous is the only anesthesia you receive, you will be capable of driving yourself home following the visit and can continue your daily activities as normal.
